Kalmunity Merch Market

Kalmunity is Canada's largest improv music collective that is best known for producing 2 of the countries longest running series of concerts in the city of Montreal.

Launched in 2003 by Jahsun as an outlet for black & cultural expression. Kalmunity has since cultivated a global network of over 100 diverse, multi-lingual, multi-disciplined, nomadic creators.

From members of Arcade Fire & Nomadic Massive to Meghan Patrick, Alan Prater, D’bi Young Anitafrika & Narcy. Kalmunity has shared moments with these stand-outs & more, including opening for legendary acts such as Public Enemy & The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble.

The collective is a largely attended festival favorite that has headlined a multitude of events across Canada including The Montreal Jazz Fest, The Irie Music Fest, House of Paint, Art of Blend & Nuits D'Afrique to name a few.

Kalmunity has been showered with accolades by outlets such as Cult MTL & The Mirror. They’ve been covered by the likes of CTV News & Breakfast Television, featured in the Montreal Gazette & Le Devoir & were named one of the top 10 cool things to do by Local Montreal Tours.

Musically Kalmunity is known for being proficient, experimental & genre bending. Vocally the collective is daring, inspirational & uncensored. Fans have described the experience as spiritual, informative & life altering.

The essence of Kalmunity isn't easily recreated in recording studios. The collective is recorded at live events which thus far have produced 2 albums & an anthology of literature entitled The Talking Book.

Kalmunity produces 2 weekly events which combine an annual attendance of 5000+ patrons. Tuesdays flagship is housed at Petit Campus while Sundays sessions, fronted by Malika Tirolien, reside at Cafe Resonance.

Since 2005 Kalmunity has produced an annual black history month series. Between 2006 & 2009 a spring monthly was produced to highlight focused projects. Record attendance was obtained in 2013 with a sold out 10th anniversary concert. A summer series was launched in 2016 to celebrate icons & themes while 2017 brought about a women’s history month series to highlight & honor feminine excellence while exploring important issues.

Kalmunity also lead monthly workshops for those who look to explore improv, need aid in their creativity or seek mentorship. They have been invited as faculty or artists in residence to institutions such as the Banff Center of the Arts & Windsor University as well as travelled to provinces like Nova Scotia to conduct youth oriented workshops in areas such as Africville.

Kalmunity happily lends time & resource to inner city groups & institutions. They are an official partner of Stolen From Africa as well as The Konscious Market who alongside the collective, on occasion, provide space for entrepreneurs to share their goods & services. Generated profits are in part donated to youth groups such as Jeunesse 2000 & Place Benoit.

Kalmunity is poised to become a system unlike any other which aims to guide, enrich & produce urban talent for decades to come.

Kalmunity is presently directed & operated by Preach Ankobia. Band direction is overseen by Jahsun while Jjanice+ directs all vocal bookings.
